Quantity vs Quality
After a couple of very successful videos in February, I learned something that I’ve always been wondering.
Is it better to spend more time on a video to get the best possible content produced?
Or should I spend less time producing “polished” videos and create more?
As a solo creator, I think the answer is not as simple as it sounds. I think there is merit in doing both.
Quantity
Focusing on quantity would 100% generate more views, but with content that is not unique, growth would come but I’d probably feel less challenged and eventually lose interest in the creative process.
This will be for a couple of desk setup videos. Less time demanding for me to create but still challenging enough to keep me excited about the creation process.
Quality
Focusing on quality also brings growth whilst keeping me interested and excited about the process, but the trade-off is… TIME! Having a regular 9-5 job outside of content creation means I spend a lot of time in late evenings and weekends creating content. This causes tiredness and stress and ultimately can lead to burnout.
I don’t think I’ve reached that point, but I know I was close to it a couple of weeks back. I experienced a feeling of not wanting to create or even open Final Cut Pro for a few days 🤣 That is not good. I normally love creating. So I took that as my body trying to tell me to slow down.
Finding the right balance
So my focus in the last two weeks has been on creating content that is still interesting but perhaps less challenging, to give me a balance where I can keep consistent but not killing my passion in the process.
I don’t think I’ve “mastered” this yet but I am learning and I LOVE that I can share this experience with you as I feel that doing so really helps me. The simple act of putting my thoughts down into this newsletter is enough sometimes to make me realise that whilst still relatively small, the channel is made of real people, and people like you who come back to my content, and support me.
And to me that is HUGE, because I know you will understand when I don’t produce a “banger” video. Those videos take a LOT of effort and time to create.
Videos featuring flagship devices will always do better on the channel. But I am always conscious of how much these things cost, and always want to do my best to show these products in a polished way. (Yes that is real fog behind the iPhone 👀)
The importance of having a good balance came to a head last week when I had to deal with more disruptions in the studio, more leaks and noise from construction work that made it just that extra bit harder to create content.
So you may have noticed that my last couple of videos were simply short “filler” videos to keep the YouTube algorythm happy 🤣
Sponsorships
Another point about balance, is related to sponsorships. There is a lot of personal investment that goes into keeping a tech channel going, details which I will share in another newsletter update.
But for now, I just wanted to share with you that I am constantly trying to select the “right” fit for the channel when it comes to sponsors. This is not always perfect, however. There aren’t that many regular sponsors so someties, it comes down to a bit of a lottery - when the sponsor is happy for me to be creative and introduce the product in my own way it’s perfect. But other times sponsors want something that doesn’t really fit my style or the stuff that you are interested in.
Videos like this Apple Watch band review, will always tank. But they play an important part in the channel’s financials. One day, sponsors will be more aligned to my content 🤞🏼
And because of that, some videos will tank because the product that I am reviewing may be from a sponsor that not many people will care about. And that’s ok. 😊
Ultimately, as the channel grows I can be even more selective of the sponsors I work with and keep the channel as informative and entertaining as possible. And hopefully with your help and continued support, this will come soon!
Wishing you a great day and “see” you next week!
Some very excellent points Alex! I used to be such a perfectionist when it came to producing content, wanting every video to be better then the one before! I wanted all my videos to be as high quality as I could get, creating fancy intros and skits for every video but it honestly way too much work and I didn't see the benefit of doing all that work as the majority of people don't really care about that kind of stuff! Posting more content is definitely something I need to work on especially as Engineering is getting harder and harder, leaving with me almost no time to do YouTube let alone sleep! Hopefully I can get an internship in May so it'll be a regular 9-5 which means I don't need to study or do assignments!
Thanks for sharing Alex. I have been feeling the same so have decided to go back to focusing on writing my blogs. YT, Blog, small human and FT job its just to much. I am glad you are finding a balance.
